Runnymede

Today could have been described as Memorial Day!
The weather forecast was for very hot weather, so we rose early and walked to a local Tesco to stock up (Grandchildren expected to visit tomorrow) and carry groceries back to Josephine before it got too hot. What would we do without Google maps!
After breakfast we decided to walk up Coopers Hill to the Airforces Monument. It was build in 1953 and is dedicated to all airmen from around the world who have no known grave. Over 20,000 Commonwealth and British airmen and women are commemorated here, listed by name, engraved onto the walls surrounding a garden square. In the main building there is a spiral staircase which leads you up onto a roof terrace with fantastic views of the surrounding area.

We then walked back through the woods to the memorial to the Magna Carta 'Symbol of freedom under law'. It commemorates the signing of the Maga Carta in 1215 and forms the basis of law and freedom around the world. Built in 1959 by the American Law Association, who apparently make regular visits to this memorial.

Nearby there is a memorial to J F Kennedy. From the entrance gate you walk up a cobbled brick path with steps, arising to the monument. I think there were 50 steps representing the 50 states of the USA.
This acre of land was given by the British people in memory of the assassinated JFK. So for our visit you could say were we're visiting American soil, and we didn't even have our passports!
After all this exercise and on such a hot day we needed refreshment of course and handily there is a tearoom nearby! Time for tea and crumpets.
